This general response to condolence letters expresses gratitude and thanks.
Dear {Recipient},
Handwritten notes are a lost art these days, and though I was happy to hear from so many friends and family members via email after {the deceased's} passing, it was an even greater feeling to have a "real" letter in my hand from you.
It meant a great deal to me that you took the time to tell me that story about {the deceased}, and to convey to me how much you, too, would miss {him/her}. The mourning is difficult, and at times it seems unbearable, but I find that looking at cards or letters from my friends and family has eased the burden, if only slightly. I know I have people out there who care about me. Thank you for being one of them.
Sincerely,
{Sender}
